A community of Hong Konger Canadians is launching a #IAmHongKonger campaign. The nationwide campaign calls on the Hong Kong-Canada diaspora communities to claim their ethnic and cultural origin as “Hong Konger” in this year’s census to preserve their unique identity.
According to Canada’s 2016 census, there are at least 215,775 Hong Kong-born immigrants residing in Canada today, but no official figures track those of Hong Kong ethnic or cultural descent. The Canadian government has yet to officially recognize this identity. Without reliable statistics, service providers, policymakers and community organizations are unable to serve the needs of this unique population.
